Unwanted hair can mean constant shaving, waxing, tweezing, irritation, ingrown hairs and planning around regrowth.

At Naiva, we take a more personalized approach to long-term hair reduction.

We offer both Candela GentleYAG laser hair removal and electrolysis because no single technology is ideal for every type of hair.

Laser can efficiently treat larger areas of dark, pigmented hair. Electrolysis works follicle by follicle and can address hairs that laser cannot effectively target, including gray, white, blonde, red and certain fine hairs.

For some patients, laser alone may be appropriate. For others, electrolysis is the better choice. And for patients with a combination of hair types, the most effective strategy may incorporate both.

The goal isn’t simply to perform laser. It’s to choose the right method for the hair we’re treating.

The Naiva Approach

Different Hair Requires Different Technology.

Successful hair removal depends on much more than choosing a treatment area.

Hair color, hair thickness, skin tone, growth cycle, treatment location, hormonal influences and previous hair-removal methods can all affect how someone responds to treatment.

That is why Naiva offers two complementary approaches.

Laser Hair Removal

Our Candela GentleYAG uses a 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength to target melanin within pigmented hair.

It allows us to efficiently treat multiple follicles across larger areas and is particularly valuable when treating patients with deeper skin tones.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis does not depend on hair pigment.

A very fine probe is introduced into the natural opening of an individual hair follicle, and electrical energy is delivered to damage the follicle’s ability to produce hair.

Because follicles are treated individually, electrolysis provides a highly precise option for hairs that are unsuitable for laser.

Sometimes the Best Approach Uses Both.

A patient may have predominantly dark hair that responds well to laser but also have several gray, blonde, red or resistant hairs.

Instead of continuing to laser hair that the device cannot effectively target, Naiva can transition those remaining hairs to electrolysis.

Laser can efficiently reduce the bulk of appropriate pigmented hair. Electrolysis can precisely address what remains.

What Would You Like to Treat?

Face

Unwanted facial hair can occur along the upper lip, chin, jawline, cheeks, sideburns and other areas.

Depending on the color and thickness of the hair, we may recommend laser, electrolysis or a combination approach.

Candela GentleYAG Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Reduction for a Wide Range of Skin Tones

Naiva uses the Candela GentleYAG, an Nd:YAG laser operating at a wavelength of 1064 nm.

Laser hair removal works through selective photothermolysis.

The laser delivers light that is absorbed by melanin within appropriately pigmented hair. That light energy is converted into heat, which damages structures responsible for hair growth while treatment parameters are selected to protect the surrounding skin.

The result is progressive, long-term hair reduction over a series of treatments.

Because the 1064 nm wavelength penetrates more deeply and has lower absorption by epidermal melanin than shorter hair-removal wavelengths, Nd:YAG technology is commonly used when treating deeper skin tones.

But wavelength alone does not make every treatment automatically safe or effective.

Appropriate settings, skin assessment, recent sun exposure, hair characteristics and provider technique all matter.

At Naiva, treatment parameters are selected according to the individual rather than applying identical settings to every patient.

Why Does Laser Require Multiple Sessions?

Hair Grows in Cycles.

One of the most important things to understand about laser hair removal is that not every hair is actively growing at the same time.

Hair moves through different stages of its growth cycle, and laser is most effective when the follicle is in the appropriate active growth phase and the hair contains sufficient pigment.

This is why laser hair removal is performed as a series rather than a single treatment.

As new groups of hair enter the appropriate growth phase, subsequent sessions target those follicles.

Many patients begin with a series of treatments, but there is no universal number that guarantees a finished result.

The number and spacing of sessions can vary according to the body area, hair density, hair thickness, skin type, hormones and individual response.

Instead of promising every patient that they will be finished after exactly six sessions, Naiva evaluates your progress throughout the series and adjusts your treatment plan accordingly.

What Happens to the Hair?

After treatment, successfully targeted hairs do not necessarily disappear immediately.

Over the following days and weeks, treated hairs may begin to shed.

With successive treatments, patients may notice:

  • Less overall hair growth
  • Slower regrowth
  • Patchier growth
  • Finer remaining hair
  • Less frequent need to shave

Laser hair removal is best described as long-term hair reduction, not a guarantee that every hair will permanently disappear.

Some patients may eventually benefit from maintenance treatments, particularly when new hair growth is influenced by hormonal or biological changes.

Laser Hair Removal for Deeper Skin Tones

The Technology Matters. So Does the Provider.

Treating melanin-rich skin requires thoughtful wavelength selection and appropriate treatment parameters because the goal is to heat pigment within the hair while minimizing unnecessary thermal injury to the surrounding skin.

The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength used by the GentleYAG is particularly valuable for treating darker skin types because it has less interaction with epidermal melanin than several shorter wavelengths commonly used for hair removal.

That makes it possible to treat a broad range of skin tones when the patient is an appropriate candidate and the device is used correctly.

At Naiva, we evaluate your skin tone, treatment area, hair characteristics, recent sun exposure and relevant history before treatment.

Settings are then customized accordingly.

Good laser hair removal isn’t about using the highest setting. It’s about using the appropriate setting for your skin and hair.

Electrolysis

Precision Hair Removal, One Follicle at a Time.

Laser requires sufficient pigment within the hair to create an effective target.

That means certain hairs, particularly gray, white, blonde, red and some very fine hairs, may respond poorly or not at all to laser treatment.

Electrolysis provides a different solution.

During electrolysis, a very fine sterile probe is inserted into the natural opening of an individual hair follicle. Electrical energy is then delivered to damage the follicle’s ability to produce hair.

Because electrolysis targets the follicle directly rather than relying on melanin within the hair, hair color is not the determining factor.

This makes electrolysis particularly valuable for small areas and individual hairs that cannot be effectively treated with laser.

Common treatment areas may include the:

  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Jawline
  • Brows
  • Face
  • Bikini line
  • Small areas of resistant hair
  • Remaining hairs after laser treatment

Electrolysis is considerably more precise than laser, but that precision also makes it slower.

Every follicle must be treated individually, which is why laser is generally more efficient for larger areas of appropriate pigmented hair.

Laser + Electrolysis

Two Technologies. One Complete Strategy.

This is where having access to both modalities becomes especially valuable.

Imagine a patient with predominantly dark chin hair but several gray hairs mixed throughout the area.

Laser may efficiently reduce the dark, pigmented hairs, but repeatedly treating gray hairs with laser is unlikely to provide the same benefit because there is insufficient melanin for the laser to effectively target.

Instead, Naiva can approach the concern strategically.

Laser reduces the appropriate pigmented hair across the area.

Electrolysis targets the light or resistant hairs individually.

The same strategy may be useful toward the end of a laser series when only scattered hairs remain.

Rather than continuing the same treatment indefinitely, we can reassess what remains and determine whether changing modalities makes more sense.

That is the advantage of treating the patient rather than simply treating the area.

Your Treatment Journey

01

Consultation & Assessment

We evaluate your skin tone, hair color, hair thickness, density, treatment area, previous hair-removal methods, relevant medical history and goals.

From there, we determine whether laser, electrolysis or a combination is most appropriate.

02

Personalized Treatment Plan

Your provider explains the recommended modality, anticipated treatment series, treatment intervals, preparation, potential risks and realistic expectations.

For laser patients, settings are selected according to your individual skin and hair characteristics.

03

Treatment

For laser hair removal, the treatment area is systematically treated using the GentleYAG.

For electrolysis, individual follicles are treated using a fine probe.

Treatment duration varies considerably according to the modality and size of the area.

04

Progress Assessment

Hair reduction is a process.

As you progress through treatment, we evaluate your response and determine whether your treatment interval, settings or modality should change.

If laser has successfully reduced the majority of the hair but inappropriate laser targets remain, electrolysis may be recommended to continue refining the area.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

The Way You Prepare Matters.

Proper preparation helps us perform laser treatments more safely and effectively.

Before your appointment, your provider will give you instructions specific to your treatment area.

In general, patients may be instructed to:

Avoid waxing, tweezing, threading or electrolysis before laser treatment. The follicle needs an appropriate hair target for laser treatment.

Shave according to your provider’s instructions. Unlike waxing, shaving leaves the relevant portion of the hair associated with the follicle available for laser targeting.

Avoid tanning and self-tanner. Changes in skin pigmentation can affect treatment settings and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Tell us about medications and skincare products. Certain medications or topical products may affect treatment suitability or skin sensitivity.

Tell us about recent sun exposure. Do not assume that because you did not burn, your skin is unchanged. Recent tanning or significant UV exposure may require treatment to be postponed.

Your provider will give you specific pre-treatment instructions based on the area being treated.

After Your Laser Treatment

Temporary redness, warmth, mild swelling around the follicles or sensitivity can occur following laser hair removal.

Your provider will give you individualized aftercare instructions.

Protecting treated skin from excessive sun exposure is particularly important. Broad-spectrum sunscreen and sensible sun protection should be used on exposed treatment areas.

Avoid intentionally tanning treated areas during your treatment series.

If you experience an unexpected reaction, contact our clinical team rather than attempting to treat it yourself.

Why Naiva

The Right Technology Is Only the Beginning.

Owning a laser does not automatically make every patient a good laser candidate.

The quality of hair-removal treatment depends on patient selection, understanding skin and hair biology, choosing appropriate technology, selecting appropriate settings, recognizing when a treatment is not working and knowing when another modality is more appropriate.

At Naiva, we offer both laser and electrolysis so that we do not have to force every patient into the same treatment.

If your hair is appropriate for laser, we can take advantage of the GentleYAG’s ability to efficiently treat larger areas.

If your hair lacks the pigment necessary for effective laser treatment, we can recommend electrolysis.

If you would benefit from both, we can create a combined strategy.

The objective is not simply fewer treatments. It is smarter treatment selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ask your own question →
What’s the difference between laser hair removal and electrolysis?

Laser and electrolysis achieve hair reduction through very different mechanisms.

Laser uses light energy that is absorbed by pigment within appropriate hairs, allowing many follicles across an area to be treated efficiently.

Electrolysis treats individual follicles using a fine probe and electrical energy and does not depend on the hair containing melanin.

For that reason, laser is generally better suited to larger areas of appropriately pigmented hair, while electrolysis is particularly useful for gray, white, blonde, red, fine, scattered or laser-resistant hairs.

Some patients benefit from both.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is more accurately described as long-term hair reduction, rather than guaranteed removal of every hair.

Successfully treated follicles can produce substantial and lasting reduction, but future hair growth can occur due to hormonal changes, age, biological factors or previously inactive follicles.

Maintenance treatments may be appropriate for some patients.

Is electrolysis permanent?

Electrolysis is used for permanent hair removal and can permanently destroy the growth capability of successfully treated individual follicles.

However, multiple sessions are still required because hairs are at different stages of growth and not every follicle can be successfully completed in one visit.

Future hair can also develop from previously untreated follicles.

How many laser sessions will I need?

There is no single number that applies to everyone.

Many patients undergo an initial series of approximately six or more treatments, but the total number depends on the treatment area, hair characteristics, skin type, hormonal influences and individual response.

We evaluate your progress rather than automatically stopping treatment after a predetermined number of sessions.

How often are treatments performed?

Treatment intervals depend on the area being treated and the hair-growth cycle.

Facial and body hair do not necessarily grow at the same rate, so appointment spacing may change according to the area and your response.

Your provider will recommend the appropriate interval for you.

Does laser hair removal work on dark skin?

Yes, appropriate laser technology can be used on deeper skin tones.

The GentleYAG’s 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength has relatively low absorption by epidermal melanin compared with shorter wavelengths, making it an important option for hair reduction in darker skin types.

However, appropriate settings and professional assessment remain essential. Skin tone, tanning, hair characteristics and treatment history are evaluated before treatment.

Does laser work on blonde, gray, white or red hair?

Generally, these hair colors are poor laser targets because they contain insufficient melanin for conventional hair-removal lasers to effectively target.

Rather than repeatedly treating hair that is unlikely to respond, Naiva may recommend electrolysis.

Can laser help with ingrown hairs?

Reducing the amount and thickness of hair can help some patients who experience recurrent irritation or ingrown hairs associated with shaving or other hair-removal methods.

However, ingrown hairs can have multiple causes, so the area should be evaluated before treatment.

Should I shave before laser hair removal?

Generally, yes, but follow the specific instructions provided for your appointment.

Laser patients are usually asked to shave the treatment area rather than wax or tweeze it.

Waxing and tweezing remove the hair from the follicle, interfering with the target the laser needs.

Can I wax between laser appointments?

Generally, no.

Waxing, tweezing and threading remove hair from the follicle and can interfere with subsequent laser treatments.

Shaving is typically the preferred method of managing regrowth between laser sessions.

Can I be in the sun before or after treatment?

Sun exposure and tanning require particular attention during a laser series.

Recent tanning can alter the amount of melanin in the skin and may increase the risk of burns or pigment changes, potentially requiring your treatment to be delayed or your settings to be modified.

After treatment, protect exposed skin from excessive UV exposure and use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed.

Instead of relying on one universal number of days for every patient, Naiva provides instructions based on your treatment area, skin type, recent sun exposure and treatment parameters.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Sensation varies according to the area, hair density, treatment settings and individual sensitivity.

Patients commonly describe brief sensations of heat or snapping during treatment.

The GentleYAG incorporates cooling technology designed to protect the epidermis and improve patient comfort.

Can I have laser hair removal if I have a tan?

Possibly not immediately.

A recent tan changes the pigment level in the skin and can affect treatment safety.

Tell your provider about recent sun exposure, tanning beds, self-tanner or spray tanning before your appointment.

Treatment may need to be postponed until it can be performed more safely.

Why would I switch from laser to electrolysis?

As laser treatments progress, the remaining hairs may become increasingly sparse, fine or consist of colors that laser cannot effectively target.

At that point, repeatedly lasering the area may provide diminishing benefit.

Electrolysis allows those remaining follicles to be treated individually.

Knowing when to change modalities can be just as important as knowing how to perform the treatment.
