What are PDO threads?

PDO threads are medical-grade absorbable sutures made from polydioxanone, a material used in many medical procedures. In aesthetic medicine, specialized PDO threads may be placed beneath the skin to provide support or encourage localized tissue remodeling. Different threads serve different purposes. Some are smooth and are mainly used to stimulate a tissue response; others have barbs or similar features that engage tissue and provide a modest lift. The degree of lifting depends on the thread design, placement, tissue characteristics and individual anatomy.
Benefits of PDO thread treatments
Depending on the thread type and treatment plan, PDO threads may:
- Provide modest improvement in selected facial contours.
- Improve the appearance of mild tissue descent.
- Create subtle lifting in the right candidates.
- Encourage localized collagen formation.
- Offer a minimally invasive option for patients not ready for surgery.
PDO threads do not provide the same degree of lifting or longevity as a surgical facelift.
How do PDO threads work?
PDO threads are inserted beneath the skin with a needle or cannula. Lifting threads engage the surrounding tissue to provide mechanical support. The threads gradually break down through a natural process called hydrolysis, during which the surrounding tissue may develop a localized collagen response. How much collagen forms, and how much it adds to long-term improvement, varies.
What areas can PDO threads address?
Depending on the thread design and your anatomy, PDO threads may be considered for:
- Jawline: mild loss of definition from tissue descent.
- Lower face: early jowling or mild sagging.
- Cheeks: subtle repositioning of descended tissue in the right candidates.
- Other facial areas: depending on the thread system and your provider’s assessment.
Not every PDO thread is appropriate or cleared for every use.
Who is a good candidate?
PDO thread lifting generally suits patients with mild to moderate laxity who understand the limits of nonsurgical lifting. Patients with significant skin laxity, substantial tissue descent or pronounced excess skin may get more predictable results from surgery. Your provider will evaluate your facial anatomy, skin quality, medical history and expectations.
What to expect during treatment
Your appointment begins with an assessment of facial anatomy and tissue laxity. Your provider will discuss the thread type, treatment plan, expected improvement and possible complications. A local anesthetic is typically used before the threads are placed. Treatment time varies with the number and placement of threads. Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and tightness are common. Recovery may include short-term limits on facial movement, exercise, sleeping position or other activities.
How long do PDO thread results last?
Results vary widely with the thread type, treatment area, degree of laxity and individual tissue response. The threads gradually dissolve, often over several months, and any visible lift may lessen as the tissues settle and aging continues. Long-term evidence on how long cosmetic thread lifts last is limited, so no specific duration can be guaranteed.
Understanding the risks
PDO thread lifting is a medical procedure and carries risks, including bruising, swelling, infection, asymmetry, visible or palpable threads, skin dimpling, thread extrusion and irregular contours. Some complications may need further treatment or thread removal. Careful patient selection and an experienced medical provider are essential.
Every treatment is performed by a licensed provider under Medical Director oversight, with clear protocols.

Questions patients ask
Answers from the clinical team, in the order they tend to be asked. Anything specific to you is confirmed at consultation.
Ask your own question →Is a PDO thread lift the same as a facelift?
No. PDO thread lifting is minimally invasive and generally gives more modest results than surgery.
Are PDO threads permanent?
No. PDO threads are made from absorbable material that gradually breaks down.
Do PDO threads stimulate collagen?
Thread placement can produce a localized tissue response that includes collagen formation, although how much and for how long varies.
Is there downtime after PDO threads?
Yes. Recovery is generally shorter than after surgery, but expect swelling, bruising, tenderness and some short-term activity limits.
