Obagi® in Miami

Even tone and texture, maintained every day.

Obagi is a physician-dispensed skincare system for melasma, dark spots and photodamage that need prescription strength, using actives such as hydroquinone and tretinoin where appropriate. At Naiva it is prescribed as a structured regimen, matched to your skin and to the in-clinic treatments you are receiving.

The goals are familiar: melasma or sun spots that a Miami summer darkens every year, a texture that catches light unevenly, breakouts that shouldn't still be happening, fine lines that have started to stay. Over-the-counter products are limited by regulation in what they can contain and how strong they can be, so they often plateau just when you'd hoped they'd deliver.

02

Where you want to be

Obagi is a medical-grade line, meaning its formulations are dispensed through clinicians and can include prescription-strength actives that over-the-counter products cannot. Its best-known system, Nu-Derm, is built around hydroquinone to correct pigmentation and tretinoin to accelerate cell turnover, sequenced across a cleanser, toner, corrector, exfoliant and sun protection. Other Obagi ranges address aging skin, acne and daily maintenance without hydroquinone, so the regimen can change as your skin does.

Used as prescribed, the actives reach the layers where pigment is made and new cells are formed, which is why the change is in the skin's behavior rather than only its surface. Retinoids and hydroquinone need to be introduced carefully and, in hydroquinone's case, used in cycles with breaks. That guidance is the difference between a regimen that works and one that ends up unused in a drawer.

03

What to expect

At your assessment we look at your skin under good light, ask about products you're using, medications, pregnancy plans, sun exposure and any past reactions, and photograph a baseline. The regimen is written out step by step, morning and evening, with instructions for how to build up the active steps.

Expect an adjustment period. Prescription-strength retinoids and hydroquinone commonly cause dryness, flaking, redness or a temporary increase in breakouts as the skin adapts, usually within the first two to six weeks. This is anticipated, managed with pacing and supporting products, and it settles.

The visit

A skin assessment. Your clinician reviews your skin and current products, takes baseline photographs and writes out a regimen with a phase-in schedule.

First days

Phase-in. Gentler steps come first, then actives are added gradually; some tightness, flaking or redness is normal as the skin adapts.

Results

Texture often improves in 4–6 weeks. Pigmentation and fine lines take longer, with the most visible change at three to four months of consistent use.

Longevity

Maintained with daily use. The regimen is reviewed at follow-ups and moves to a maintenance phase once your goals are met.

Who it tends to suit

  • Melasma, sun spots or post-inflammatory marks that over-the-counter products haven't shifted
  • Rough texture, enlarged pores or persistent adult acne
  • Early to established signs of aging: fine lines, dullness, loss of firmness
  • Patients preparing for, or maintaining results from, peels, laser or microneedling
  • Those who will follow a written routine consistently and wear SPF daily
  • Hydroquinone and tretinoin are not used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding; alternatives are chosen instead
04

Who performs it

Because several Obagi products contain prescription actives, your regimen is set at a clinical assessment, documented in your record, and reviewed at follow-up visits rather than handed over at a counter.

If you're having in-clinic treatments, your clinician coordinates the timing, pausing certain actives before a peel or laser session and restarting them afterward, so home care supports the clinical work rather than competing with it.

Credentials

Every treatment is performed by a licensed provider under Medical Director oversight, with clear protocols.

Standards

Consultation before any treatment. Products and devices chosen for your anatomy and your goals. Results vary by individual and build over time.

Does Obagi hurt or sting when I apply it?

Some stinging or warmth on application is common in the first weeks, especially with tretinoin and hydroquinone, along with dryness and flaking. It's a sign the actives are working on the skin, not an allergy, and it eases as the skin acclimates. If it becomes more than mild, we slow the phase-in or adjust the strength rather than push through.

Will my skin peel or get worse before it gets better?

Often, yes, and it's expected. Tretinoin speeds up cell turnover, so the first few weeks can bring flaking, redness and sometimes a temporary flare of breakouts as congestion surfaces. This adjustment phase usually passes within two to six weeks. We plan the ramp-up so it stays manageable and give you supporting products for the interim.

Does Obagi work for melasma and dark spots?

Pigmentation is where Obagi's Nu-Derm system is best known, because hydroquinone reduces the production of pigment and tretinoin speeds its clearance. Most patients see meaningful lightening over three to four months of consistent use with strict daily SPF. Melasma is a chronic condition that tends to return with sun and hormones, so results are maintained with a long-term plan rather than a single course.

Obagi or SkinCeuticals?

SkinCeuticals supplies the daily antioxidant and corrective layer; Obagi is used when pigmentation or photodamage needs prescription strength. Some patients use both, and your clinician decides which fits at your assessment.

Can I use Obagi with Botox®, fillers or laser treatments?

Yes, and that's how it's usually prescribed here. It has no interaction with neurotoxins or fillers. Before peels, laser or microneedling, certain actives, especially tretinoin, are paused for a period your clinician will specify, then restarted once the skin has recovered.

Is hydroquinone right for my skin?

Used as prescribed and supervised, hydroquinone has a long record as the reference treatment for pigmentation. It's prescription-only in the strengths Obagi uses, is used in cycles of a few months followed by a break, and is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Your clinician monitors the skin at follow-ups and moves you to a maintenance regimen without hydroquinone at the appropriate point.

How much does an Obagi regimen cost?

Cost depends on which products and strengths your regimen includes, since a full pigmentation system and a three-step maintenance routine are very different. Pricing is set at your assessment.
