What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a collagen-stimulating injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible, biodegradable substance that encourages the body to produce new collagen.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, which provide immediate volume by placing gel beneath the skin, Sculptra works gradually by stimulating collagen production within the treated tissues.

Collagen is the structural protein that keeps skin firm, elastic and supported. As we age, collagen production declines, contributing to facial hollowing, wrinkles and changes in facial contours. Sculptra helps address these changes by supporting the gradual restoration of facial structure.

Benefits of Sculptra

Sculptra may help:

  • Restore volume lost through natural aging.
  • Improve the appearance of facial wrinkles and folds.
  • Stimulate natural collagen production.
  • Improve the appearance of fine lines in the cheeks.
  • Create gradual, natural-looking facial rejuvenation.
  • Provide results that can last up to two years after a full treatment series.

Rather than creating an immediate transformation, Sculptra allows improvements to develop progressively as your body produces new collagen.

How does Sculptra work?

Sculptra contains microscopic particles of poly-L-lactic acid suspended in a solution. Once injected, these particles stimulate a biological response that encourages collagen formation around the treatment area. Over the following weeks and months, new collagen gradually develops, improving the appearance of volume loss and supporting smoother facial contours. The PLLA particles are eventually broken down and absorbed by the body, while the newly formed collagen contributes to the treatment’s longer-lasting effects. Sculptra helps rebuild the collagen and structure we lose as we age.

What areas can Sculptra treat?

Sculptra is FDA-approved for correcting certain facial wrinkles and contour deficiencies, including nasolabial folds and fine lines and wrinkles in the cheeks. Depending on your facial anatomy and goals, your provider will determine whether Sculptra is right for you. It is particularly appealing to patients with age-related facial volume loss who prefer gradual improvement over immediate augmentation.

What to expect during treatment

Your appointment begins with a comprehensive facial assessment to evaluate volume distribution, skin quality and facial proportions. Sculptra is administered through a series of carefully planned injections. A topical or injectable anesthetic may be used for comfort. Treatment typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas treated. Most patients return to their usual activities shortly afterward, although temporary swelling, tenderness or bruising may occur. Your provider will explain aftercare, including any recommended massage of the treated areas.

When will I see results?

Sculptra is designed to produce gradual improvement rather than immediate volume correction. Some temporary fullness may be visible right after treatment because of the injected solution; this typically subsides. Collagen stimulation develops over the following weeks and months. Many patients need a series of treatments, often spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on individual anatomy, age-related changes and treatment goals.

How long does Sculptra last?

Clinical studies have shown improvement lasting up to two years after an appropriate treatment series. Individual results vary with the treatment areas, the amount of product used, biological response and other factors.

Ask your own question →
Is Sculptra the same as dermal filler?

Sculptra is classified as an injectable dermal filler, but its main benefit comes from stimulating collagen production rather than immediately replacing volume with hyaluronic acid gel.

Will Sculptra make my face look overfilled?

Sculptra is designed to produce gradual improvement. The right product selection, placement and dosing keep facial proportions balanced and natural-looking.

How many treatments will I need?

Many patients benefit from several sessions. Your provider will build a personalized treatment plan at your assessment.

Can Sculptra be combined with other aesthetic treatments?

Yes. Depending on your goals, Sculptra may be part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan alongside other injectable or skin treatments.
